Slovakia Schengen Visa

Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area. A Slovakia Schengen visa is a short-stay visa for travelers who need permission to enter Slovakia for temporary purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, conferences, cultural events, sports activities, short training, medical travel, or airport transit. Slovak official guidance explains that a uniform Schengen visa allows stays in the Schengen Area for no more than 90 days within any 180-day period.

A Slovakia Schengen visa can usually allow travel to other Schengen countries as well, as long as Slovakia is the correct country for your application and your visa validity, number of entries, duration of stay, and territorial validity are followed.

Slovakia applies the common Schengen short-stay rule, which means your total stay in Slovakia and other Schengen countries must not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period. If your stay in Slovakia will exceed 90 days, Slovak guidance states that you should usually apply for a residence permit or a national visa, depending on the purpose of stay.

Who May Not Need a Visa

• You are a citizen of an EU, EEA, Swiss, or Schengen country
• You already hold a valid Schengen visa that covers your travel dates, entry type, and planned stay
• You already hold a valid residence permit issued by a Schengen country
• You hold a valid long-stay visa issued by a Schengen country
• You are an eligible family member of an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen and fall under relevant free movement rules
• You are a visa-exempt traveler staying within the allowed 90 days in any 180-day period
• You are only transiting and your nationality or route does not require an airport transit visa

Even when a visa is not required, border officers may still ask for supporting documents. This can include a valid passport, accommodation proof, return or onward travel, travel purpose, travel medical insurance, and proof of enough funds for the stay.

Slovakia Visa Requirements

Most applicants should be ready to provide:

Slovak visa guidance lists common supporting documents including the application form, passport, photo, documents proving travel purpose, transport, accommodation, financial means, travel health insurance, and any other documents needed to verify the purpose of travel and intention to return.

For financial proof, Slovakia generally expects applicants to show at least €56 for each day of stay. Travel medical insurance should be valid in all Schengen Member States and provide minimum coverage of €30,000 for repatriation, urgent medical attention, or emergency hospital treatment.

• Check whether Slovakia is the correct consulate
  If Slovakia is your main destination, or your first Schengen stop when all stays are equal, Slovakia is usually the right country for your application.
• Confirm where you can apply
  Applications are normally submitted through the Slovak embassy, consulate, diplomatic mission, or authorized visa application center responsible for your country of legal residence. Slovak official guidance says the application should be lodged with the diplomatic mission of the main destination, or the first-entry country when no main destination can be determined.

  If you are visiting a private host, company, event organizer, school, medical provider, or institution in Slovakia, you may need an invitation letter, host details, company documents, event confirmation, or treatment documents.
• Check if a verified invitation is required
  In some cases, Slovakia may require an invitation verified by the Foreign Police Department. This can apply to private visits, business visits, or other cases depending on the embassy and applicant profile.
• Book your appointment in time
  Slovakia Schengen visa applications should be submitted well before travel, but not earlier than 6 months before the intended visit. They should generally be lodged at least 15 calendar days before the trip.
• Attend biometrics and submit your file
  You may need to attend in person with your passport, signed application form, photos, appointment confirmation, supporting documents, insurance certificate, and accepted payment method. Fingerprints and a digital photo are collected for many applicants.
• Pay the visa and service fees
  The standard Slovakia Schengen visa fee is currently €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 are generally exempt from the visa fee, although service center charges may still apply.
• Wait for the decision
  Slovakia Schengen visa processing is usually around 15 calendar days. In individual cases, it may be extended up to 30 calendar days, and exceptionally up to 45 calendar days if additional documentation is required.
• Collect your passport and check the result
  If approved, a visa sticker is placed in your passport. If refused, you should receive a written decision explaining the refusal reason and possible appeal options.
